Preparing for Forgiveness

Preparing for forgiveness is like treating a wound because any wrong done to you is like a physical wound to your body. It may be just a bruise or, worse yet, a deep cut. If untreated, you will lose blood, risk infection, and even die if the cut is terrible. So, if you were physically cut, the primary medical steps you can follow would be:

  1. Stop the bleeding: Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. If bleeding persists, seek emergency assistance.
  2. Clean the wound: Rinse the wound well with clear water. Thorough wound cleaning reduces the risk of tetanus. Use soap and a washcloth to clean the area around the wound.
  3. Apply an antibiotic: After you clean the wound, apply a thin layer of an antibiotic cream or ointment to discourage infection and help your body close the wound.
  4. Cover the wound: Bandages can help keep the wound clean and keep harmful bacteria out.
  5. Change the dressing regularly: Do so at least daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty.
  6. Watch for signs of infection: See your doctor if the wound does not heal or if you notice any redness, drainage, or swelling.
  7. Enjoy healing!

Steps for Forgiveness

Just like a physical wound, the wrong done to you needs treatment – a step-by-step process. Whatever they did to you, whatever the wrong – it is painful and requires treatment. When you follow a straightforward process, forgiveness can be more easily understood. It can help you understand something abstract and make it concrete.
