REAL Men Are Godly Examples

REAL men are very rare, because they are not only good (Godly) examples, they practice sound doctrine and sound speech. The Apostle Paul gives us all of this great information in Titus 2:1-8.

Good Example

Addressing Titus as a younger man, Paul tells him to be a “pattern”, an example “of good things.” Men, could God point at you as a type or mold for others, a pattern to follow that demonstrate what a REAL man is? Or, are you a pattern that shows what REAL man ISN’T?

Young men look for godly men you can imitate, men you can pattern your life after.

Let the luster of your life be a common school of instruction, a pattern of virtue to all. – John Chrysostom

REAL Man

…in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility – Titus 2:7

Sound Doctrine

This is closely associated with faith. If you have a flimsy faith, you will likely have a flimsy doctrine. False doctrine leads to life problems and worst of all – to eternal problems. The wrong doctrine can be the difference between a life with God or a life in hell. For believers, it will be the difference between just being a child or being a Servant King.

Don’t make the mistake of creating doctrine from what you believe. Doctrine is only from what God’s Word says. Always be willing to alter what you believe as God’s Word becomes clearer to you as you walk with the Lord and interact with other Godly men and women.

It is easy to think that what you have taught or believed must be adhered to no matter what. That would be incorrect. We are fallible, depraved creatures and if not willing to listen to God speaking to you, you will become entrenched potentially in error.

There are too many things that I have taught in the past that I would not teach today. And, be careful of what I am stating to you even now. Always go to God’s Word to prove the validity of any person’s teaching or writing.

Sound doctrine is not only firmly rooted in God’s Word, it also is dependent on God’s perfection and man’s depravity. Any doctrine that says it can answer all of the questions is not to be trusted, because God has stated clearly that faith is required. There will always be things that we wonder about, but it should never be the basics like how you become a child of God and how you can be secure in that relationship. What is intriguing is a REAL man’s sound doctrine is not demonstrated in his theology, knowledge or wisdom:

…in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility – Titus 2:7

The implication is sound doctrine is demonstrated in the character of a REAL man.

REAL men are a beacon of integrity – the same on the inside as they are on the outside. This is the one and only time this word for integrity appears in the New Testament. It can refer to qualities of moral soundness, purity, and being devoid of any corruption. Here, however, it speaks to the quality of Titus’ way of teaching and includes the elements of honesty, sincerity, and purity of motivation. You could say that a REAL man is a person “with a true heart.” There is no hidden agenda with a man of integrity. What he says and does in one place is the same in another, the same in public as in private.

He is also reverent which takes us back to verse 2. A sound doctrine shows up in a REAL man such that he is “easy to respect”. There is a consistency in thinking, actions and speech that shows a care for others and a desire to serve rather than be served. Those men are easy to be around and easy to respect. Is that true of us?

Sound Speech

How fitting and perfect is God’s Word that sound speech follows what was just stated about doctrine showing up in character. What flows from the mouth in the form of words is another reflection of our character, our thinking, and our heart. Use a concordance or Bible software and search for “mouth” and you will find multiple scriptures to read. Look at this one from Proverbs.

The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips – Proverbs 16:23

What a great picture. The wisdom that is in the heart is like a puppeteer or ventriloquist, moving the mouth and lips based on what is right, sound and wise. (In the Old Testament the heart is best defined as the “inner man”, because it does not just represent feelings like the English language tends to do. Some state it as heart/mind, since it involves thinking.) Most importantly, the picture provided by God is that the mouth and lips are being controlled.

But consider the fool, what’s different? There is no wisdom in the heart/mind to teach the mouth or add learning to the lips and, therefore, you see this.

A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth; he winks with his eyes, he shuffles his feet, he points with his fingers; perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord. Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy. – Proverbs 6:13-15

The heart/mind is the fuel for your speech. If you are like a fool, not walking with the Lord and displaying the life of Christ to others, you will be displaying a heart that “…is deceitful…and desperately wicked…” (Jeremiah 17:9). Then perverse mouth is just an outlet for the “perversity in his heart”. The sad truth, that deceitful, desperately wicked heart is readily available to all believers as part of the sin nature – which is being displayed in you?

Far too often the ridicule of the gospel has not been the message, but the messenger. If people refuse to come to Christ let them say “no” to the message, not the messenger. A shameful life can cloud the purity of the presentation of God’s salvation.

At some point your heart will show in your speech and your actions. Your actions are better representatives of character than your words, but both will ultimately demonstrate what’s really inside. You and I have been in situations where wisdom shut the lips and it saved us. But unfortunately, there have been those times when our mouth opened and the stench of hell flowed from it.

A REAL man has sound speech because of the other traits that God is building into him – clear mind, self-control, sound faith, sound doctrine, sound love, and sound patience

Finally, sound speech provides a wonderful benefit. REAL men have no legitimate condemnation or criticism. Those who criticize a REAL man will eventually shame themselves, because their accusations are without merit or substance. Those false accusation may not be revealed in this life, but a REAL man is not concerned about that – he is focused on reigning with Christ in eternity. What happens here is training him for that time.
