Adam’s Role – The PROBLEM Started in the Garden

Adam's role in the original sin in the Garden of Eden is downplayed as if he were an innocent bystander. Let's see if that fits God's Word. Unfortunately, Eve gets most of the blame, but Adam is more at fault.

The PROBLEM came from the original sin in the Garden of Eden. Four beings were eyewitnesses to that original sin - the Serpent (Satan), Eve, Adam, and God. When you look at what each of those beings DID and DID NOT do, it has great application to relationships and life today. This video looks at Adam and his role in the original sin.

Adam's Role

Genesis 3:17 states that Adam was worse than Eve. Why? He depended on Eve and himself, not God. There are no recorded statements from Adam during Eve and the serpent’s conversation, no recorded questions from Adam to Eve about the fruit. But what God gave us in His Word shows explicitly that Adam ignored God’s word, took the fruit, and ate it.

It is easy to look at this account and see how foolish that was, but do not miss the point about your life. How many things are you ignoring that God has shared with you? Satan gets you focused on other people’s behavior, especially in relationships, so that you do not observe the reality of where you stand in your obedience to God’s Word. Please, be careful about that.

Abdicated His Leadership

Adam did not tell Eve what she had done was wrong: “Eve, that is what God told us NOT to DO. Please stop. We need to ask God what we need to do now.” But he did not do that, and he did not talk to God about what Eve had done or talk to God about what he was about to do.

If he was present during the conversation, he did not enter the conversation, did not correct the misquoted command, did not seek the truth about the claims Satan was making, did not check with God before they did anything, and did not stop Eve from eating.

The Differences

The same scriptures in Genesis chapter 3 about the serpent and Eve also tell us important information about Adam.

…you have heeded the voice of your wife… – Genesis 3:17

The condemning implication is that he not only put Eve above God, but that he may have had a conversation with Eve prior to eating. It may have only been Eve saying something like, “Here, eat this,” or a discussion about what Satan had stated. Whatever happened (be careful about speculating), you can know the clear facts that he followed, obeyed, and depended on Eve, not God.

And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. – 1 Timothy 2:14

Adam ignored the truth. Unlike Eve, he was not deceived. My belief is that is clearly worse than what Eve did. What do you think is worse – ignoring the truth or ignorance of the truth, ignoring the truth or being deceived because of a lack of understanding? Both are ultimately sin and have consequences.

Adam Is More Guilty

I speculate that Adam’s sin was worse.

Eve was deceived, trapped, ensnared, duped, and beguiled by the most cunning, sly, crafty, shrewd animal of God's creation. She was led down a path of promises that were not true.

On the other hand, Adam was not deceived, trapped, ensnared, duped, or beguiled. When he took the fruit and ate it, it was NOT because of Satan’s deception. It was NOT because Eve made crafty, cunning, beguiling, shrewd, or ensnaring statements. He simply ignored God’s command.
