About 01 - Overview and Personal Assessment

Most importantly, you will see the “10 Second Summary” of all the GR8 Relationships courses. Additionally, in the “Two Ways to Live,” you can see a chart that helps you see the two primary ways any person can live and how some of the material in GR8 Relationships relates to each other.

There are many questions listed that will be answered, life questions you can consider, and 7 common reasons couples disagree about working on relationships.

Finally, before diving into GR8 Relationships, it is best to assess where you are right now. The current reality about your relationships is an excellent starting point to help you make decisions on those areas that are most important for you to consider working on right now.

This chart summarizes much of the information in GR8 Relationships and shows you how your life will go when choosing the sin nature or your new nature. There is a truism, "Where you look, you tend to go." The chart demonstrates that statement; unfortunately, the left side of the chart seems to be our autopilot. The right side requires deliberate decisions.

Because of the differences between men and women, they approach working on their relationship differently. One of the statements I make to men is, "You probably do not want to be here, and the reason is that you are a man." That often helps him relax, especially after I tell him that coming to counseling is like admitting failure or defeat. That goes against a man's testosterone-based design, which wants victory, significance, and success.

When it comes to relationships, you are on either one of two paths—the road to breaking or the road to restoring. Any relationship and even marriage can be broken. Nobody is immune! If you believe you are, you are naïve or dishonest with yourself. How many times have you seen a couple that looked happy only to discover later the relationship ended and ended badly?

The survey questions focus on specific elements in life. It is easier to stay out of reality when looking at your life as a whole. This is not making a case for compartmentalizing your life, but when you assess the specifics, it allows the discovery of facts and truth to see reality.

What is your primary behavior right now? Considering your behavior overall, not in just one or two situations, which would you choose below? Most people will identify with both areas to some degree but choose which most describes you.

You may see some areas you want to change after completing the surveys. Wanting to change is not the same thing as taking action to change. If you want something, especially if it will help you, and take no action, that will create tension in your life. You can either choose to stop wanting the change or take action to resolve the tension.

Values are evident in your thinking, feelings, and actions. Values will dictate where your limited resource of time is spent. In Matthew 6:21, Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus was referring to money in that passage, stating that you will be focused on where your treasure is, thinking about it, feeling about it, and acting in line with it. It is not improper to apply that to the broader thought of values. What you value, therefore, needs to be clear and evaluated often.
