Multitudes of self-help gurus, psychologists, and educators promote loving yourself, embracing the concept of self-esteem, and loving "ME." Unfortunately, what's worse is that Satan loves self-esteem teaching!
So, what about you? Do you think self-esteem and loving yourself support something that Satan absolutely loves and practices?
Destroys Civilizations
This problem actually leads to serious societal issues. Consider the book Family and Civilization by Dr. Carle Zimmerman. It was written in 1947. Dr. Zimmerman researched and studied the powerful civilizations of the Assyrians, Babylonians, Sumerians, Greeks, Romans, and Westerners, and documented evidence that one key element has brought about the downfall of all of them.
He summarized his findings by examining the smallest unit of a society – the family – and demonstrated how an increased focus on self leads to a decline in family cohesion, ultimately resulting in the overall decline of civilization. Here is a simple chart of part of his research.
The Degrading Element
Note the common increasing element or the common degrading element. What do you see?
Emphasis on individual rights, ME, or self
Neither he nor I are against individual rights – that is extremely important to a free society. Still, it is also its undoing when it is raised above the good of the society.
“The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions
performed by private citizens.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville
Dr. Zimmerman also listed eight symptoms of an Atomistic Society (self-absorbed society).
- Marriage loses its sacredness, frequently broken by divorce.
- The traditional meaning of the marriage ceremony is lost
- The feminist movement abounds
- There is an increased public disrespect for parents and authorities in general
- There is an increase in juvenile delinquency, promiscuity, and rebellion
- The hostility of the pseudo-intellectuals to the traditional family soon spreads to the common people, sealing the doom for the society
- There is an increase in adultery
- There is a tolerance for and spread of sexual perversions of all kinds
